with 7 in our household to feed, i want to think smarter at the store and in the kitchen as head chef of our bustling home. feeding my family with healthy, nutritionally-dense foods is a high value of mine. i ALWAYS see where i can grow in this (we need to increase our fresh veggies intake) but here are some of our attempts. it's fun to hear see my children getting influenced toward health; some of the younger ones think outloud and factor in whether something is healthy/healthy! i smile when i hear our 8 year old ask how many grams of fiber or sugar is in a serving... i hope for most of my recipes to have these values written into them: minimally processed ingredients, whole grains, natural sweeteners, low to no dairy and lean proteins... i love to jot down recipes that are healthy and full of flavor. i log them in my recipe box as "favorite" when everyone likes it; my search is then over for our favorite recipe of that particular dish. i plan to slowly post those favorites here. with our bodies being the houses of our spirits / souls, i believe that how we nourish them is of vital importance. since many long term health problems have roots in nutritional deficiencies or excesses, our daily menu impacts our future days. i hope to develop eating habits for myself and my family which will set us up to serve Jesus better for many healthful years. after having been hospitalized 6 times for the birth of our babies, i learned quickly that i don't want to end up in the hospital for reasons that i could have prevented with better choices. this also helped me choose a strong daily supplement plan to build a solid foundation, a longterm investment in our health. weaning from sugar and carbs has been the hardest for me. i was diagnosed with pre-diabetic symptoms after getting an incredible preventative battery of blood work results from True Health Diagnostic Labs. any doctor can do this for you, if they will send your blood to this lab. it doesn't cost any more than your regular lab draw. previously we were getting regular blood work to check for disease markers such as cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, etc. but then a cardiologist/naturopath sent my bloodwork to THD. my experience with THD was absolutely amazing, hands down. after you get your bloodwork results back, you can set up a phone appointment with a registered dietician who can tell you how to improve your numbers with diet and exercise. she can explain your numbers and answer all of your nutrition questions in depth! i spent an hour and a half in my first consultation and left the conversation thinking that it was the most helpful health related appointment i've ever had in MY LIFE. it was that amazing. my numbers showed me that i was prediabetic because of the extensive tests. with a regular annual blood exam, this wouldn't have come to my attention until i GOT diabetes, the biomarkers they test are not specific enough. this blood test even told me that there were signs showing my blood sugar having spiked in the past 2 weeks (better than an a1c test that is a snapshot in time 3 months ago, i think...!). this knowledge plus my dietary changes, i hope, will keep me from ever getting diabetes which runs in my family. after eating like this for about 6 months, i'm finally used to not eating a regular breakfast (usually full of carbs) but eating my low glycemic Life Plan Shake, eating a baby sized portion of rice or noodles at lunch or dinner, cooking with more veggies and just plain discontinuing the habit of getting seconds! eating more fiber is also part of the plan... well, back to recipes (somehow this recipes page morphed into my health journey--lol!) i've been working on a system to streamline my kitchen work, too. knowing that most of us rotate through the same recipes every 1-2 weeks, i got to thinking that i need to be smarter in creating my shopping lists. saving time has been really important to me with having a child with special needs. i hope you'll find my organizational tips helpful to you in streamlining your system. i will be progressively updating my Streamlined Kitchen Series in my nest blog page (see top toolbar). happy and healthy eating! most of my cooking is from scratch, with whole grains, using natural sweeteners, little to no dairy and incorporating lean proteins. we lived in Japan for about 10 years and at first, i thought i cooked this way because such products were not available to me...until we returned for a furlough in the States. i didn't cook any differently.
oh, and by the way, i LOVE flavor! i hope you'll agree when you taste some of our favorites. |
